Culinary Adventures – Florida

What’re your travel plans this summer? For the week of July 4th we were fortunate enough to visit a few towns in Florida and see what people are fixing to eat.

First we stopped near Tallahassee and were given farm fresh goods- milk from Aspen the Goat, green figs straight from the tree, homebaked bread and berries from the property that was next to Lake Talquin.

Next, we drove over to Clearwater where we were taught about green lipped mussels- never had those before- they are delicious! So were our local sea scallops with wild mushrooms!

In Miami beach, we treated ourselves to red snapper ceviche. For lack of a better word- it’s devine. What kind of ingredients do you put in your ceviche?

We also had Miami style shrimp n’ grits- with tomatoes (and tomato-y sauce) and green onions- totally different from shrimp n’ grits with butter that we’re used to from having grown up in North Carolina and Georgia.

In The Florida Keys (are you hearing The Beach Boys playing in your head yet?), they have Mahi-Mahi tacos and conch fritters as far as the eye can see. Everywhere we turned, there were all kinds of variations of key lime pie too.

What cooking inspiration have you brought back or planning to bring back from your travels?
